Selkie Queen by BlackMage339 Selkie Queen by BlackMage339
Selkies are found in Irish, Scottish, Icelandic and other cultures and folklore, but generally they are seals which take the form of a human when they shed their seal skin - you know the drill, man hides skin of beautiful maiden, forces her to marry him, she finds the skin and returns to the sea. This is my vision of the Queen of the selkies - seals look beautiful and lovely, but they are hunters, and good at what they do. I hope she looks like a skilled and competent huntress rather than a helpless pretty face.

This is an idea that has been rolling around in my head for a while now, but I only really got anything worthwhile down on paper after reading about a contest for super heroines outside the generic skinny big-breasted supermodel. Granted, she isn't really breaking the mold much - hell, I'd love to look like that - but she is not posing for the camera. I'm not entering the comp though, because I don't really draw in superhero comic style - I've tried, and it never works.

I probably will colour it, because some of the shading and lines don't seem to make much sense in greyscale and I think colour would fix that.

I love her pensive look and strong arms  Also the hands - especially the one in perspective - look great!

Wow! I didn't know that. This is such an amazing concept, very interesting folkore!
She's beautiful, and the freckles!! Awwww! I really love the pose and expression cos it's very sponaneous and natural, very relaxed and calm; you can tell she's not possing for the camera or anything, just chillin' and that's refreshing! I always these kind of poses where the characters expressions and poses are spontaneous :aww: I also would like to mention I like very much how the hair flows, the fact body shape looks organic and natural, like a real woman! :D Not like the exaggeratly voluptuous supermodel thing that people usually do.
I personally think you could enter to this contest, I've seen how some people who make comics draw and it looks a bit like in this drawing. I think you could ink the drawing with black pen (maybe a bit of stronger lines in the outlines) and paint it with markers or pencil colors or pastel colors and it's ready :D There's not much difference between illustration and comics, I've noticed the only thing that mainly differences the comics form other genre of art it's the black line, and the face it's cartoonish-ed enough, so, I think this drawing would work well for a comic style.
oh and in my opinon, I don't think the shading and lines don't make sense, they all are very well defined and I can see clearly everything :D Even the seal skin cos you've added on the outlines of it a bit of a furry effect and that it's great! :D

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like the pose and figure, I tried to make it more realistic on both counts :) I think I will be inking it/tracing it, I like the greyscale version but I'd like to see it in markers too :D Glad you like the shading too! I'm so lazy when it comes to references forlighting and suff, so I'm glad it makes sense for a change! XD

I think its a great idea to ink or trace it :D

I love this design - she looks very capable and no-nonsense (you know, like an actual ruler...) She looks strong and has some nice substance in the stomach, forearms, and hips. And I love her freckles! :la: Great character, and great work!

I love love LOVE the shading in this and her pose as well, I think she's completely different to anything you'd find in the comp, I like her, I think you should keep her as a character  she doesn't look very pleased about being caught "mid-change"

Thank you - and thanks for the fav! :D The more I think about her the more I want to build a story around her - I'm off to see Brave this week so hopefully I'll get some inspiration!

I'm glad you could tell what she's doing at least, sometimes I look at it and it just looks like she's starting a sack race or something XD
